The big “Birthday Bash” in celebration of the 10th year for the Fresno High Alumni Association and the 120th graduating year for Fresno High was held on a very, very warm Saturday evening in front of Royce Hall on May 16, 2009. Tables were set-up on the street in front of the school, which made the heat of the day even greater considering the heat retaining asphalt. Aside from the heat, the tables were set for 300 guests and nearly all chairs were filled in spite of the heat. That gives you an idea how dedicated our alumni has become. Marie Slater, chairperson, did another wonderful job this year in putting on another successful event.

Celebrating a birthday along with the alumni of FHS was Hazel Chess Calderwood who turned 101 this year. Hazel graduated in 1925 and attended along with two of her sons, Bob (Class of 1958) and Richard (Class of 1955), missing was Bill (Class of 1962). Their Dad, Edward, also graduated from FHS, but is now deceased. A true FHS family.

There were nearly 100 silent auction items and five live auction items, thanks to the time and effort from Jackie Garo Boyajian. The music clubs from FHS entertained until dinner was served. Entertainment under direction of Mr. Ruffner, in charge of the jazz band and the orchestra and choir was directed by Mr. Sandersier. Mr. Hernandez and Mr. Morales were in charge of the Folklorico group which did an excellent job on many dances and then the dance troupe glided around the dinner tables selling 50/50 tickets. A total of $750 was collected for the 50/50 with half going to Folklorico and half was won by Nikki Hoernicke.

Each year, the Senate, under the direction of Ms. Haven Wilson, serves the dinner and waits the tables. The heat did not stop their excellent support of the evening. Pitchers of water were constantly being filled and tables were waited as if they were professional servers. Jack Fowler opened the evening with a few words about the Association and then introduced Principal, Bob Reyes who spent some time updating the guests as to what was happening at the school and an update on the changes to the campus coming.

Since most on the alumni association committee are getting up in years, we depend on school support to get some of the heavy duty work accomplished for us. Mr. Howard Zinn’s Leadership kids came through again by helping to set up tables and chairs and any other duties they were asked to do. After the dinner, Mr. Les Zielinski’s JROTC helped to take down tables and chairs and set them aside for later pick-up. There was a color guard who presented colors to start the festivities, also under the direction of Mr. Zielinski.

This was a celebration of birthdays, so the center pieces on the table were birthday cakes for dessert. The cakes were decorated by four students from the Delta after school cooking program under the direction of their student advisor, Felis Atermoso. Most cakes simply stated Happy Birthday, but seven of them stated Happy 70th Birthday as they were set on tables for the class of 1957. There were nearly 70 alumni from this class who were turning 70 this year so they decided to celebrate their milestone at the Big Birthday Bash. Elaine Sudjian, reunion coordinator for the class, also had flags and other goodies on their tables to help them celebrate.

Another successful dinner for 2009 is complete. The committee does have concerns about putting on this fund raiser in the future as the City of Fresno has placed strong and expensive compliance regulations upon us which means whatever is raised to help students and teachers at our Alma Mater has now been reduced by $1,000 or more. There comes a time when the funds that are raised by an event must be weighed against the time and energy to put the event together.
